Swimathon
Would YOU like to participate in a swimathon on Tuesday 19th December as part of the SYFEN team?? Go on bare all, it’s for charity!!!
We will also feature the swimathon in the SYFEN newsletter with a nice picture of those that took part!
The aim is to raise a minimum of £15,000 for the Neo natal ward in Sheffield . Sheffield is one of 2 choices in the country for the specialist care that Jessops provide, they even take children from parts of Europe . It costs £1000 per day, per child, so even if they can raise the £15,000 target that will help one child for 15 days – on average a child will spend 90 days in the unit, so you can see the issues they are facing.
What they are looking for is groups of women to club together and book half and hour to an hour slots, raising lots of cash for the event. They are only allowed 18 swimmers in the pool per half an hour, it is hoped they can raise a minimum of £50 per swimmer, so over the 12 hours they can hopefully raise £22K!!
If you would like be part of the SYFEN team, please email Danielle Morris on women@betatechnology.co.uk

A quote from Julie Readman, Managing Director BLSY.
'Raising the profile of enterprise and helping to make South Yorkshire the best place in the UK to start and grow a business is what Business Link and our partners are aiming for, so it was fantastic to bring such an inspirational event to an audience of female entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs - thanks to all the speakers and exhibitors, but most of all to those who are not just dreaming of going into business, but are doing it!'
The Women in
JD Approach had a major breakthrough when they were invited to speak at the event by Business Link South Yorkshire, where they outlined the benefits of using technology to an audience of women looking to set up or grow their business. Feedback from attendees at the event was very encouraging.
Deborah said, “We are passionate about IT and the benefits it can bring to business. Working for many years in a male-dominated environment has given us invaluable insight into the barriers that some women face when it comes to dealing with technology. Past research undertaken by Prowess puts our male counterparts well ahead of us when it comes to using and investing in IT systems. We are committed to helping redress this balance and levelling the playing field. We would love more women to feel confident about using IT both in their business and at home and will support them however possible.”

a party.
Comments from some of the attendees;
'Thanks to you and the rest of the SYFEN team for a great event this week. I am interested in finding out more about the mentoring scheme and becoming a mentee.'
'Just a quickie to say thanks for inviting me last night. I had a really good time and met lots of really interesting people. I will definitely be recommending your organisation in the future. Congratulations on organising a fab event!!'
'I attended last nights event which was excellent. It was the best networking event I have attended so far. The speakers were excellent, it was very well organised, everyone was really friendly and I met lots of very interesting people. I felt that I obtained a much greater understanding of women starting out in business, as I didn't realise before how difficult this can be.'

Team members L-R Antony Davies, Milena Harbach, Kate Hull- Rodgers, Yasmin Khan, Marina Larios.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE SYFEN EVENT
I have been involved with the organisation of the SYFEN Networking Events since they began in October 2003 and thoroughly enjoy working with the SYFEN team to put them together.
Many people remain blissfully unaware of the blood, sweat and tears (literally!) that goes into creating these events so I have been asked to provide an insight into the madness that goes on behind the scenes! The most recent event took place on Tuesday 1st March 05 at the Sheffield Park Hotel and was without a doubt the best yet. We arrived en mass at the venue early in the afternoon to begin setting up and to allow time to resolve the inevitable last minute panics, it is at this point when one becomes obsessed with the smallest detail and the hotel staff begin to run for cover…..uneven table cloths, cordial bottles that aren’t perfectly centred and confirming I ordered the plate of food for the non-wheat eating fruitarian who requires non-fat non dairy milk in her coffee and a left handed spoon with which to stir it….I’m only half joking!!!!

After careering around like a women possessed for about three hours I finally collapse behind the registration desk and gather my composure before the first delegates begin to arrive, I re-apply the lippy, brush the biscuit crumbs under the table (we mugged a passing caterer in the hall) and prepare for 130 women to descend on us – quite a daunting task for the few brave men who kindly agreed to help us!
As always the event is a phenomenal success and we are already planning the next one for some time in June!

June 2005 Event
WOW!!!! A Big thanks to all of you who attended and supported the event on the 16th June, all 170 of you…..
What a fantastic turnout!!!!
A big thank you to everyone who helped organise and assist on the evening. Without these people giving up their evening, the event would not be possible. So a big round of applause to the unsung heroes, especially to those who brought food/drink/refreshments – they know who they are!

We were blessed with sunshine, albeit with a few moments of light rain, the BBQ was fabulous. We had a terrific evening and even managed to accost the Mayor of Barnsley Cllr. Joe Hayward and his Lady Mayoress Pauline Haigh for an impromptu photo shoot.

Yasmin commented, "It was really good of the mayor and Mayoress to drop in."
For those of you who have not yet returned your evaluation forms, could I give you a gentle nudge to remind you to send them back. These are most important as they give us an indication of what we need to improve and what we do well - and in turn make YOUR events better and better every time.
Look forward to seeing you at the next event in the Autumn, until then:
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
